Es wurde am 2. März 1977 aus dem Erzbistum New Orleans herausgenommen. Das Bistum Houma-Thibodaux untersteht diesem heute als Suffraganbistum.
Das Bistum umfasst die Parishes Lafourche, Terrebonne, wie auch Teile der Parishes St. Mary und Jefferson.
