Brinay liegt etwa 60 Kilometer ostsüdöstlich von Nevers im Morvan. Umgeben wird Brinay von den Nachbargemeinden Tamnay-en-Bazois im Norden, Maux im Nordosten, Limanton im Süden und Osten, Biches im Westen und Südwesten sowie Alluy im Westen und Nordwesten.
