Bis zur landesweiten Neuordnung der französischen Kantone im März 2015 gehörten zum Kanton Descartes die neun Gemeinden Abilly, Civray-sur-Esves, Cussay, Descartes, Draché, La Celle-Saint-Avant, Marcé-sur-Esves, Neuilly-le-Brignon und Sepmes. Sein Zuschnitt entsprach einer Fläche von 205,33 km2. Er besaß vor 2015 den INSEE-Code 3709.
