Die Gruppa A 1940 war die fünfte Saison der höchsten sowjetischen Fußballliga. Sie begann am 2. Mai und endete am 17. November 1940.[1]

Dynamo Moskau gewann mit zwei Punkten Vorsprung vor Dinamo Tiflis zum dritten Mal die sowjetische Fußballmeisterschaft. Lokomotive Tiflis wurde im September ausgeschlossen. Deren Ergebnisse wurden annulliert. Die letzten beiden Teams stiegen in die Gruppa B ab.
