Präsidentschaftswahlen in Gambia 1996
Die Präsidentschaftswahlen in Gambia 1996 fanden am 26. September 1996 statt. Nach einer Schätzung[1] hatte Gambia 1996 eine Bevölkerung von 1.192.548 Einwohnern.
Zwei Jahre nach dem Militärputsch von 1994, waren es die ersten demokratischen Wahlen in dem westafrikanischen Staat Gambia. Anführer der Militärjunta Leutnant Yahya Jammeh, der zuvor aus der Armee ausgetreten war, trat nun als Präsidentschaftskandidat an.
Jammeh wurde mit 55,8 % mit einer Amtszeit von fünf Jahren zum Staatspräsidenten gewählt.
Wahlverfahren und -kreise
Zum ersten Mal wurde in der Zweiten Republik Gambias der Staatspräsident direkt vom Volk gewählt.
Wahlvorbereitung
Es stellten sich vier Kandidaten Zur Wahl, zum einen Yahya Jammeh mit seiner Partei Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC). Herausgefordert wurde er von Ousainou Darboe mit seiner Partei United Democratic Party (UDP) und Hamat Bah mit seiner Partei National Reconciliation Party (NRP). Ehemalige Regierungsmitglieder der Ersten Republik waren zu der Wahl nicht zugelassen, lediglich die People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS) war nicht unter den Parteien, deren eine Beteiligung an der Wahl untersagt wurde. So stellte sich Sidia Jatta von der PDOIS wie 1992 als Präsidentschaftskandidat auf.
Wahlausgang
Von den 446.541 zuvor registrieren Wählern wurden 394.537 Stimmen abgegeben, damit lag die Wahlbeteiligung bei 88,35 Prozent. Jammeh wurde mit 55,8 Prozent der Stimmen zum Staatspräsidenten auf eine Amtszeit von fünf Jahren gewählt.[2][3]
