Der Ort wurde 1801 von John and Thomas Townsley gegründet. Der Ort hieß zuerst Milford, wurde aber wegen Verwechslungsgefahr mit Milford (Ohio) in Cedarville umbenannt.
Cedarville ist der Sitz der privaten evangelikalen Cedarville University.
