Proailurus
Proailurus ist eine ausgestorbene Raubtier-Gattung aus dem späten Oligozän und frühen Miozän Eurasiens, die bisher als ältester direkter Vorfahre der Katzen galt[1] Neuere phylogenetische Untersuchungen ordnen sie dagegen als basalen Vorfahren verschiedener katzenartiger Raubtiere ein.[2]

Proailurus war etwas größer als eine heutige Hauskatze mit einer rekonstruierten Schulterhöhe von etwa 38 cm. Mit der Art Proailurus lemanensis ist sie erstmals in 30 Millionen Jahre alten Ablagerungen aus Frankreich nachgewiesen.[3]
Ein wahrscheinlicher Nachfahre ist Pseudaelurus, der erstmals vor etwa 20 Millionen Jahren auftrat.
