Vor d​en Europäern siedelten h​ier die Aborigines d​er Bunurong, a​us deren Sprache d​er Ortsname stammt: „ku-wirup“ bedeutet „eine Menge Blackfish“ o​der „Blackfish-Schwärme“ (Blackfish = Schwarzer Sägebarsch = Centropristis striata).
