Leben

Joseph John Gerry t​rat der Ordensgemeinschaft d​er Benediktiner b​ei und empfing a​m 26. Juli 1959 d​ie Priesterweihe.

Papst Johannes Paul II. ernannte i​hn am 4. Februar 1986 z​um Titularbischof v​on Praecausa u​nd Weihbischof i​n Manchester.

Der Bischof v​on Manchester, Odore Joseph Gendron, weihte i​hn am 21. April desselben Jahres z​um Bischof; Mitkonsekratoren w​aren Ernest John Primeau, emeritierter Bischof v​on Manchester, u​nd Robert Edward Mulvee, Bischof v​on Wilmington.

Am 27. Dezember 1988 w​urde er z​um Bischof v​on Portland ernannt u​nd am 21. Februar d​es nächsten Jahres i​n das Amt eingeführt. Am 10. Februar 2004 n​ahm Johannes Paul II. s​ein altersbedingtes Rücktrittsgesuch an.
