Die Stadt wurde nach einem Choctaw-Häuptling namens Chief Atoka benannt, der 1830 den Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek Vertrag unterzeichnete. Sein Name leitet sich aus dem Choctow-Wort hitoka oder hetoka ab, was Ballspielplatz bedeutet.[1]
