Als offizielles Ergebnis einer administrativen Reorganisation Lissabons am 8. November 2012 wurde Socorro Teil der Gemeinde Santa Maria Maior. Historisch und kulturell bemerkenswert in Socorro ist vor allem das ehemalige Maurenviertel Lissabons, die Mouraria.
