Follow Me Up to Carlow

Follow Me Up to Carlow ist ein traditionelles irisches Lied, das den Sieg von Fiach (Feach) McHugh O’Byrne über die Engländer bei der Schlacht von Glenmalure im County Wicklow während der zweiten Desmond-Rebellion (1580) besingt. Im Lied werden drastische Details dargestellt, wie Ströme von Blut und die Enthauptung von Black Fitzwilliam. Der Text zu Follow Me Up to Carlow wurde von Patrick Joseph McCall (1861–1919) geschrieben. Von der Melodie wird erzählt, dass sie von den Musikern schon während der Schlacht gespielt wurde. Das Lied ist in einer Molltonart geschrieben und steht im 6⁄8-Takt.[1][2]

Would you let a Saxon cock
Crow out upon an Irish rock,
Fly up and teach him manners.

From Tassagart to Clonmore,
There flows a stream of Saxon gore
Oh, great is Rory Oge O’More,
At sending loons to Hades.
White is sick and Lane is fled,
Now for black FitzWilliam’s head
We’ll send it over, dripping red,
To Liza and her ladies.
