Bei der Verleihung der CMA Awards im Oktober präsentierte Charlie Rich (der CMA „Entertainer of the Year“ des Vorjahrs) die Gewinner. Nachdem er den Umschlag geöffnet hatte, nahm er ein Feuerzeug, und verbrannte den Zettel mit dem Namen des Gewinners. Danach verkündete er mit hörbarem Widerwillen: "Mein guter Freund John Denver!" Mit dieser Aktion wollte Rich seine Unzufriedenheit mit dem Abdriften der Country-Musik ins Pop-Lager ausdrücken.
