Gemeinsam m​it seinem Bruder Shashi Ruia gründete e​r 1969 d​as indische Unternehmen Essar Group. Nach Angaben d​es US-amerikanischen Forbes Magazine gehört Ruia z​u den reichsten Indern u​nd ist i​n The World’s Billionaires gelistet.
