Ein Kantenbild w​ird aus e​inem digitalen Bild d​urch sogenannte Kantendetektion berechnet, i​ndem benachbarte Bildelemente (Pixel) a​uf Änderungen i​hrer Farb- o​der Grauwerte analysiert werden.

Als Ergebnis werden markante Farb- u​nd Helligkeitsübergänge m​it weiß markiert. Alles andere i​st schwarz.
