Epiglottale und pharyngale Konsonanten entstehen am selben Artikulationsort. Esling (2010) beschreibt den Laut mit dem Namen „epiglottaler Plosiv“ als “active closure by the aryepiglottic pharyngeal stricture mechanism – that is, a stop produced by the aryepiglottic folds within the pharynx”.[1] Der Kehldeckel bewegt sich also genauso wie beim Schlucken.
