Rhodotorula mucilaginosa (früher Rhodotorula rubra) ist eine Hefe, die im Abwasser[1] sowie auf Bettwäsche vorkommt[2] beziehungsweise grundsätzlich häufig mit dem Menschen assoziiert ist.[3] Rhodotorula mucilaginosa wurde bereits auf der International Space Station (ISS) nachgewiesen.[4] Die Hefe ist aufgrund der roten Pigmentierung biotechnologisch zur Herstellung von Carotinoiden von Interesse.[5]
