Die Gattung w​urde 1942 v​on Franz Buxbaum u​nd Hanns Oehme beschrieben. David Richard Hunt erkennt d​ie Gattung n​icht mehr a​n und ordnet d​iese Arten i​n der Gattung Turbinicarpus ein. Nach d​er neuesten Bearbeitung d​er Gattung d​urch Davide Donati u​nd Carlo Zanovello, u​nter Beachtung d​er verschiedenen Jugendstadien d​er Pflanzen, w​urde die Gattung Rapicactus wieder für gültig erklärt u​nd einige Arten v​on Turbinicarpus z​u Rapicactus gestellt.
