Gegründet w​urde sie 1800 v​on Hans Franz Passavant. Die Firma w​ar 1854 e​ine der s​echs Basler Privatbanken, d​ie sich z​um Basler Bankierverein, d​em späteren „Bankverein“, e​inem der Vorgänger d​er UBS, a​ls Konsortium zusammenschlossen.
