Der Ort wurde 1234 erstmals als Karrectochell erwähnt; spätere Schreibweisen als Carrigtuoghill, Carrigtoghill, Carrigtowhill und Carrigtowil sind bekannt.
Er liegt östlich von Cork an der Eisenbahnlinie Richtung Midleton.
