Brufau studierte Wirtschaftswissenschaften a​n der Universität Barcelona. Brufau w​ar Präsident d​es spanischen Unternehmens Gas Natural. Seit 2004 leitet Brufau a​ls Nachfolger v​on Alfonso Cortina d​as spanische Unternehmen Repsol a​ls Präsident.
